Tonight, I rock a baby who is not mine.

For the fifth time this year, we have a foster-baby.

I snuggle her close and gaze into her eyes as I feed her a bottle and sing Jesus over her. I kiss her forehead and pat her back just as if she were mine. I swaddle her tight and I tuck her in beside my pillow as if she were mine. But Jesus said, “Not this one.”

When we offer to foster a baby in the midst of our craziness, and when people learn that we are fostering another baby, they make the “you’re crazy” face. (come to think of it, people make that face at me a lot ;) ) “Don’t you already have your hands full?”

Yes. My hands are full. My heart is full. My life is full. And that is why I do it. Because faith is a verb. Faith does. Love does.

And because someone, somewhere did it for me.

My babies grew in someone else’s womb and someone else did the hard labor of bringing them into this world. Whether they remember the person or not and whether we know the person or not, my children did not survive the first years of their lives on their own. Even though for most of them the early years were not ideal, and even though I was the one chosen to teach them about consistent meals and bear hugs and pajamas, someone, somewhere carried. Someone, somewhere held. Someone, somewhere fed.

And with great hope I believe that one day in Heaven I will know who these people were and I will be able to embrace them. To these people, wherever they are, I am incredibly grateful. I feel so privileged to be able to do the same for a Momma who can’t right now.

We say “Yes.” Our hands are full. And we believe we have been filled to spill out.

Today we are thankful to love in the gap.

Sweet Katie, you have changed my life. Your words are so beautiful and I want to thank you for sharing them. I have 3 teenage daughters and I see pieces of you in all of them and am so blessed. I want more. I want more of a relationship with Him because I see now the beauty of it. I am not worthy of His attention, but I know He wants mine. I pray for you often as I pray for my own daughters. I pray for you, your daughters, your safety, and your strength. I thank the Lord for blessing this earth, Uganda, Masese, your daughters, your family, your friends, and your many followers and supporters with the gift of you. You are changing lives and I thank you for changing mine.

Upon hearing about you from a pastors' wife on Sunday, I have spent my week reading your blog all the way back to 2007. While reading you blog God has broken my heart for the country of Uganda and suddenly everything I read has something to do with Uganda. I just want to let you know you have truly inspired me, my heart is aching to answer the call of God on my life. One day I want to meet you and just give you a great big hug. I am so thankful for all you are doing over there. I believe God is going to open a door for me in Uganda and I cannot be more excited!

Just a 19 year old/ministry intern/college student from the gulf coast of Mississippi passionate for God.

God Bless you!

As my 4th grade teacher always said, "Crazy people help make this world more interesting!" Continue to help baffle the world with your craziness Katie^_^ Besides if you didn't do what you've been doing you never would of heard the hilarious comments Patricia said about the turkey! My grandma & I thought those Tweets were hilarious!:) Thanks for sharing.

Psalm 126 -128 (Message)
It seemed like a dream, too good to be true, when God returned Zion's exiles.
We laughed, we sang,
we couldn't believe our good fortune.
We were the talk of the nations—
"God was wonderful to them!"
God was wonderful to us;
we are one happy people.

And now, God, do it again—
bring rains to our drought-stricken lives
So those who planted their crops in despair
will shout hurrahs at the harvest,
So those who went off with heavy hearts
will come home laughing, with armloads of blessing.

Don't you see that children are God's best gift?
the fruit of the womb his generous legacy?
Like a warrior's fistful of arrows
are the children of a vigorous youth.
Oh, how blessed are you parents,
with your quivers full of children!
Your enemies don't stand a chance against you;
you'll sweep them right off your doorstep.

All you who fear God, how blessed you are! how happily you walk on his smooth straight road!
You worked hard and deserve all you've got coming.
Enjoy the blessing! Revel in the goodness!
. . . The children around your table
as fresh and promising as young olive shoots.
Stand in awe of God's Yes.
Oh, how he blesses the one who fears God!

I thought these scriptures would encourage you Katie. Continue to persevere sis. Even though many of us who read the blog might not be there physically to lend a hand we are with you in prayer and finances. You are not alone. The Mighty Lord & all of us will share the burdens with you (John 17:20-23). May your cup and your family's cup always overflow with the LORD's love! ^_^

Katie! You have no idea how much you have touched my heart! I bought your book and am devouring it. I have been wrestling with the same conflicting feelings about this culture of "so much" that I live in and a culture that can't even feed its children. We have four bio children and we are in the process of adopting a special needs baby from China. People around us are constantly looking at us with that same, "Are you CRAZY?" look. It baffles me that more people aren't on this journey. My response to them is, "Crazy is what love does." Crazy is what God did for us! And I'm so glad he did it! I have added you to my prayer list. I am praying that God will bless you with the strength you need to keep loving everyone around you. I'm praying that He would give you encouragement just when you need it and that He would continue to provide in the beautiful Country you call home. So glad to "know" a new sister in Christ!
Blessings!!

Thanks so much for sharing your lives & stories with us. You will never know this side of Heaven how much they have meant to me. I love your book and will probably read it and quote from it again and again. I am a foster mother in Missouri, and I understand where you are coming from. God bless and keep you and all of yours. Please say a prayer for us as well, as we currently are loving some little guys we will have to let go soon. My heart is so heavy for them and this heart wrenching situation, sometimes I wonder how I can make another day doing foster care. But 10+ years and two adoptions later, we press on. As long as we believe we are suppose to. Love your sister in Christ, Stacy Willoughby

Katie,
I just saw a link to your blog on facebook from an orphanage in Cambodia that I have had the pleasure to visit and serve in twice now. I felt an instant connection to your journey, one of those "a ha" moments where God points out a kindred spirit. Mine is certainly a bit different, I have 5 biological children, but similar in that God has called me to serve those that are not mine. I feel such a strong desire to mother the motherless, it sometimes overwhelms me. People think I'm crazy! I get the understated, "How can you risk leaving your own children behind?" But as you said, "It's in the bible." It's a calling, not an option. I am trying now to be still and have God reveal to me my next move. Whether to expand my current family with another biological child, an adopted child, a foster child, or just to continue serving in areas that need it the most. I'm almost 40, so I hear the clock getting slower and slower. I think, am sure, that God had me read your blog today for the first time. I will certainly read your book as well. Excited to do so. And who knows, maybe one day our kindred spirits will meet and share stories about our unique journies. Until then, God bless you and all your precious little ones.

Katie,

I found your blog through a friend and after reading the first post I couldn't stop the tears. I was then watching a video a friend had posted where you were sharing a little about your story and I was very inspired as I listened to you share about the decisions you had to make in moving to Uganda. It didnt seem like an option to you... Loving isn't an option to you. You have allowed God to love you and let that love pour out on those precious children all around you.

Your life is an inspiration... The same day God led me to your blog I had been sharing with a friend about the dreams and the desires in our hearts. We talked about our heart lining up with the heart of our Father so that His desires and ours become one. As we shared, God gave her a vision that was very similar to a dream God had given me almost two years ago. It confirmed a calling on my life. Right after I got home from being with her I discovered your blog that connected to my heart so much. God keeps confirming His promises for my life in many ways and your story is one of them. Right now I am being obedient with what God has called me to here. I will be in medical school for a few years but even through that I believe God's plans are wonderful. I know God is going to take me and use me out of the country (He has already started) and I am grateful that He would use someone as small as me to share His love.

Thank you for being obedient to God and for the inspiration you are to so many people. God is definitely not finished with you.

Dear Katie,

I just want to say that, despite a personal aversion to all things religious, I was very touched by the article about you on NPR, and now that I've discovered your blog, I'm stunned at what a great writer you are. (I say that as a writing teacher who doesn't give compliments lightly.) I don't think you are crazy at all. I think you're amazing.

Happy new year to you and your brood.

This is incredible. While reading, it took everything in me to not just break down and cry (mostly because I'm work. =D ). God has placed Africa in my heart and I long to be a mother to the motherless, a sister to the sisterless. Reading what you do and the way that God works through you just floors me. I read it and I get so excited for the day when I can post a blog about having a new foster baby. So all this to say is, although I don't know you personally, or even know that much about you...I admire you greatly. I see that God is using you in such amazing ways and it's so inspiring.

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. - 1 Corinthians 13:1-3

This is beautiful. This is faith in action. This is LOVE.
